How to read and implement self-help books
Are you that person who wants to change to be a better version of oneself?
You have decided to start a self-development journey. You have started reading books, watched You Tube videos ,listened to motivational speeches and followed many inspiring influencers. However, you do not seem to improve much? Well, you cannot just learn something, you have to implement what you have learnt or read to get the desired effects. How to get the most out of what you read will be explained in simple and doable steps.
Prepare yourself first
Have you ever paused to think before you read a book or watch a You Tube video?
Have you ever paused to access what is really going on in your mind?
This is a mental process. You have to ask yourself first that what it is that you want, what your goal is, and what it is that you want to change. You have to identify your need first. Be specific.
Choose the right book
After identifying your goal (a goal is just a simple step or a habit that you want to attain or change. It does not have to be big), choose a book that relates to it. Not every principle is right for you. Some principles might work for someone but they might not work for you. The author's perspectives might not even be in agreement with your needs. So, before you grabbing a book, check the reviews and contents.
Be an active reader
Do you know how to read actively?
Use your imagination
It is simple. Instead of just reading and trying to remember what you read, use your imagination. What it means is that you try to play out the scenarios in your mind. For instance, when you find a tip that could be useful, you recall your past experiences, the ones that would have a different result if you used this tip. And, imagine the future situations in which you could implement this tip.
Ask questions
After acquiring new information, ask these questions.
- Where will I use it?
- When will I use it?
- How will I use it?
Take notes
When you take notes, let them be action-oriented. Take notes together with a SMART goal (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time bound). Don't forget to summarize your notes and store your notes systematically.
Be persistent
When you try to change yourself, it is like trying to reprogram your mind. And it is not an easy process. You are susceptible to sinking back into your old and comfortable routine. The neuroscientists say that it takes an average of 66 days to establish a new habit. So be persistent and consistent. When you find yourself not implementing what you read anymore, ask yourself these questions.
Do I really want to change?
Am I willing to do anything to become a better self?
Well guys, now or never.
I believe you will be the best version of yourself very soon.💗
